These will help your understanding and empathy for other grow allowing you to see them as Jesus does more clearly. None of these movies are faith based.
- Just Mercy – This highly acclaimed movie tells the story of Bryan Steverson as he begins his career advocating for African Americans on death row.
- McFarland USA – This feel-good sports movie tells the story of Jim White, who d helps Latino/a students succeed as long-distance runners in a poor migrant community.
- Indian Horse – This lesser-known Netflix movie follows the story of a nativie Canadian forced into a residential school as a child and finds escape through Hockey.

August 15-17 | Tacoma, WA
YJ2M is an immersive journey for High School Students to see others as Jesus does, hear their stories, and to have conversations about immigration, compassion and justice.
YJ2M is focused on exploring the historic and contemporary realities surrounding immigration to the U.S. Through the specific lenses of the Chinese and Latino experiences in the greater Tacoma, WA area, students will have the opportunity to see others as Jesus does, hear their stories, and engage in meaningful and transformative conversations. We believe it’s crucial for young people to engage with the complexities of our world and to develop a heart for justice and understanding. Y J2M offers a unique opportunity for teenagers to step outside their comfort zones, learn from different perspectives, and grow in their faith and compassion.
Cost: $25
Includes lodging and meals from breakfast on Saturday through breakfast on Sunday.

This event is made possible due to a generous grant from the TENxlO Faith in Service Project and contributions from the Pacific Northwest Conference and private donors. Through their support we are able to offer this event at a steeply discounted cost. We have also created a generous scholarship fund. Who Are We Getting to Know?

This event is meant to be done with others, to help foster deeper understanding and compassion for others. Many youth groups and leaders of the Pacific Northwest Conference will be attending, traveling, eating, and lodging together.
WORLD RELIEF WESTERN WASHINGTON
World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to boldly engage the world’s refugee crises in partnership with the church. They will host an orientation on immigration and refugee process and statuses in the US and lead us in a prayer walk at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, WA.
CHINESE RECONCILIATION PROJECT FOUNDATION
CRPF is a nonprofit organization that advances civic harmony by way of the Chinese Reconciliation Park in Tacoma, Washington. The Chinese garden motif allows the park to stand both as an acknowledgment of the forceful expulsion of the Chinese population of the City of Tacoma in 1885, and as a celebration of the city’s multicultural past, present, and future. The park is an act of reconciliation and inclusivity toward appreciation of the people of diverse legacies and interests who are part of the city as a dynamic community.
TACOMA TRINITY CHURCH
TTC is a Korean American Covenant Church in Tacoma, WA founded in 1975. They are hosting us for a lunch and will share what God is doing in their community.
IGLESIA ESPERANZA VIVA
IEV is a Latino Covenant Church in Sumner, WA founded in 2014. They are hosting us for a dinner and worship service as well as sharing what God is doing in their community.

Groups must arrange their own arrival to and departure from Y J2M. Please arrive between 7:00 – 8:00 PM on August 15 to check in at Praise Covenant Church in Tacoma WA.

PARK & STAY AT HOTEL
After our opening session, your group will travel to, park, and stay with every other group attending Y J2M at our hotel. Your group will be given a housing form after registration closes to assign roommates.
• 2 students of the same gender per room
• No adults in any room with students.
• Adults will be paired with another adult of the same gender in rooms on the same floor as students.

Getting ARound Tacoma on Saturday, August 16th
BUS
Everyone will travel by bus to the different locations on Saturday, August 16. We will load up the buses at the hotel in the morning and be dropped off at the hotel that night. Groups are not allowed to self-transport on this day.

Expectations
BACKGROUND CHECKS
To ensure the safety of each student, each group leader is required to verify their own background checks with each participating adult leader. Registered groups will receive more information about leader verification in a separate communication from Kristi Smith.
No adult will be allowed to go if they have not completed the required background check process.
ADULT TO STUDENT RATIO
There needs to be 1 cleared adult for every 7-10 students in each group. It is recommended that you have at least 1 female leader and 1 male leader if you are bringing both male and female students; however, it is not required. There will be both female leaders and male leaders available to assist with gender sensitive issues that may arise.
THE RHYTHM OF THE WEEKEND
This event is short, but packed. We will be on the go a lot, learning about heavy (both difficult and hopeful) history and stories. There will be some downtime scheduled on Saturday, but plan to be around a lot of people and be asked to process a lot mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, for the majority of the event. If you or a student is struggling at any point during the event, we will have leaders available to come alongside them.
DEBRIEFING EACH EXPERIENCE
The point of this event is not just to experience the realities and challenges of immigrant communities, but to process those experiences in a safe and thoughtful environment with our peers. We expect each person to be an open, respectful, and gracious learner. To that end, each participant must agree to our Participant Behavioral Contract (attached).

We are asking each participant to limit their phone use to free time and emergency use only. Please leave other devices used for entertainment at home.
