Spice Up Your Ministry With Crescendo

By Sammy McCubbins, Crescendo Coach

Which is the largest age group in your congregation?

Which age group gives the most financial support in your congregation?

Would you like to get this age group to help in your ministry?

10,000 people a day are turning 65 – yes, every day.  This tsunami started in 2011 with the leading age of the Boomers and will continue until 2029.  This rapidly growing community of adults over 65 years of age is expected to be 26% of the population by 2040 in the U.S.  In 17 years there will be more people over 65 than young people under 18 years of age. These demographic shifts are affecting all of society.  How does your church look?  This approaching age wave has enormous opportunities for churches as they begin to realize the hidden treasure inherent in this group and become strategic and intentional about ministering to them.  The visionary church will do more than potlucks; it will value and celebrate the aging population through a God-serving ministry that honors, encourages, prepares and equips them to love and serve the body of Christ and the communities around them.  How can the Church unleash its potential to mobilize the fastest growing age group to help them experience life to the fullest with lasting purpose? Crescendo, a new initiative of Make and Deepen Disciples, unleashes an array of fresh ideas and online resources in a holistic approach using the acronym SPICES to enhance significant, vital living for Boomers and beyond – much like spices do when added in cooking.  The SPICES framework emphasizes the Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual Community, Emotional and Service dimensions as it raises awareness of the issues surrounding aging.  The vision is to help older adults unleash their potential and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to live with purpose, vitality, and mission in the later stages of life.  Being found faithful to the end of one’s physical life is a strong culmination of a life well lived. Alan Forsman, co-author with Evelyn Johnson of the book, “Crescendo: An Ascent to Vital Living” and Sammi McCubbins, PacNW Crescendo Coach will be presenting a 2-hour workshop on September 27 at Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor from 6 – 8 p.m. focusing on equipping pastors, staff and church leaders to unleash the missional potential of boomers and beyond to engage in the work of God’s kingdom. Come and explore the opportunities and challenges this approaching age wave presents to individuals, communities and organizations for the next several decades. Register at Harborcov.church/crescendo by September 25 to attend the workshop.  For more information contact Sammi McCubbins at 253-851-8450 or sammi@harborcov.church.
